ROBARTS LIBRARY REVITALIZATION

Toronto, Canada

2011

Architect: Diamond Schmitt Architects

Client: University of Toronto

Kris Vassilev's Scope of Work:

Design development and construction documentation for media commons, exterior stairs and display cases.

This revitalization project includes extensive improvements to study areas, librarian offices, labs, book storages, and other spaces throughout the 13-storey existing building. The project also provides new enclosed porticos - arrival halls on the second floor at the south and north entrances of the library, what previously was little-used outdoor space. A new exterior stair provides direct connections from Harbord Street on the south side of the library to the new portico on the second floor. The design is monumental and inviting, and it corresponds with the existing building and site conditions.

ROBARTS LIBRARY REVITALIZATION

Kris Vassilev's Scope of Work:

Design development and construction documentation for media commons, exterior stairs and display cases.

The functional requirements for the display cases were developed in collaboration with the library staff. These are multifunctional flexible modules that accommodate information touch screens, exhibition spaces for books, poster devices, lockable cabinets. The materials are wood veneer, clear and fritted glass and stainless steel. The display cases were arranged in two curve shapes within the new arrival hall, with the convex faces marking the path to the main library space and the concave faces providing more quite learning zones.
