MARIINSKY THEATRE II

St. Petersburg, Russia

2013

Architect: Diamond Schmitt Architects

Client: Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation

Kris Vassilev's Scope of Work:

Project Architect for back-of-house facilities; design and construction documentation for public restaurant, green room, cafeteria, conductor's office and lounge; coordination of various building details for the auditorium and the main lobby; site visits.

This $650 million complex occupies an entire block on the west bank of the Kryukov Canal opposite to the historic Mariinsky (former Kirov) Ballet and Opera Theatre and is connected to the old theatre via pedestrian bridge over the Canal. It includes a new 2000-seats auditorium with a traditional horseshoe shape design, support spaces, rehearsal rooms, production facilities, and public areas. A rooftop stage provides an outdoor facility for performances during the famous 'white' nights in St. Petersburg.

The building facade is modern while remaining respectful of the existing historic context. The glowing onyx of the interior is visible from the street.

The main lobby is a multi-story space that includes a feature glass stair running at the front of the building, small amphitheatre, barrier-free ramp, as well as a bridge connecting the VIP area with an exclusive loggia in the auditorium. In keeping with the local traditions while using contemporary means, the auditorium backlit onyx walls provide richness of the lobby interior.

The back-of-house spaces include a 170-seat public restaurant and gallery, green room, staff cafeteria, rehearsal rooms, conductor's office and lounge, lobbies, etc. The interiors of some of these spaces also incorporate elements of the backlit onyx, as well as the "old 'Mariinsky" green - the colour of the historic theatre.
