Located on a 50-acre residual site in Mississauga, Canada, Churchill Meadows Community Centre and Mattamy Sports Park comprises a large park and an array of indoor and outdoor recreational facilities. The main building, envisioned as a glimmering pavilion in the park, has a clear and readable composition: a fully glazed corridor to the east connected at its length to a bar of changing rooms and showers and, through them, to an aquatic hall with a 25m-lap pool and a leisure pool, and a triple gymnasium open towards the park to the west.

The outdoor facilities include two soccer fields (one with air-supported fabric structure), a basketball court, which becomes a hockey rink in the winter, a playground, a skate park and others. Designed by the same firm, the landscape is fully integrated with the architecture and the interiors. The project meets the requirements for LEED™ Silver certification.

The site and the building are accessible and inclusive, with 1200 to 1500 users currently per day. This increasingly popular facility, which provides opportunities for everyday sport and recreation, and encourages healthy living for thousands of regular people and diverse community groups, is an example of a new type recreational "factory", which corresponds to the needs of the 21 century.

Despite the large 4,750 m2 footprint of the building, the architectural expression is light and elegant. The more enclosed and sculptured metal skin east facade opens to a floor-to-ceiling clear glass curtain wall to the west, supported by glue-laminated mass timber columns. The colonnade provides also structural supports to a sheltered "porch " facing the park, wrapped with a three-dimensional expanded aluminum mesh.

This space "in-between" interior and exterior with benches running along the entire length of the building is a hospitable place for social interaction. During the day the aluminum mesh provides sun protection and shading; at night, the illumination of the building filters through the mesh, highlighting the rhythm of the colonnade and transforming the building into a marker in the park.
