KRIS VASSILEV, PhD Arch OAA CAB NCARB MRAIC

Kris (Krassimir) Vassilev is a Toronto-based architect with international recognition and expertise in all aspects of project development - from concept to implementation. His diverse portfolio includes various project types in North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. Many of the projects he worked on have received prestigious awards, including the 2024 Governor General's Medal in Architecture.

Kris studied architecture at the University of Architecture and Building Engineering in Sofia, Bulgaria, and in 1992 obtained his PhD from the Moscow Architectural Institute. Prior to establishing a practice in Sofia in 1994, he worked as a designer at the Transproject Design Institute in Sofia and as a project manager on a construction site in Downtown Moscow. Since 2000 he lives in Toronto where he worked with Diamond Schmitt Architects, MJMA, NORR and others.

Educated and trained as an architect and urban planner in Europe and in North America, Kris brings a unique cross-cultural perspective combining the European sensitivity to heritage and urban fabric with the progressive Canadian aspirations for developing vibrant, inclusive and sustainable communities. In 2013 he founded multiArchitecture - a design studio with special interest in the Canadian multicultural social context and its relevant architectural expression.

In addition to design work, Kris Vassilev has published numerous articles and theoretical studies, including on architectural language. His article "Multicultural Context and Architectural Expression", published in the Ontario Association of Architects Profiles - Cultural Heritage (2014), analyses the need for civic expression of diverse community groups while promoting social unity by developing an architectural language that conveys tolerance, openness and interaction. The article calls for incorporation of the principles of indigenous architecture, in particular its spirituality, symbolism and sustainability.

His publications include also studies on maritime architecture and the aesthetics of the engineering facilities in the zone where water and land meet and interact. These studies complement Kris's design work in this field.

Kris Vassilev is a registered architect in Canada with the Ontario Association of Architects, and in Bulgaria with the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria.
